Bob Sutton Out Steve Spagnuolo In as Chiefs Defensive Coordinator
Bob Sutton Out Steve Spagnuolo In as Chiefs Defensive Coordinator
The Kansas City Chiefs fired now former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton the day after losing a heartbreaking overtime game against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. The Chiefs wasted no time addressing the defensive leadership as the Chiefs defense had a lot of trouble stopping teams throughout the season. With such a bright future behind players like Pat Mahomes and Tyreek Hill bringing in new leadership is a must to remain a dominant team in the AFC and take the next step to being a Super Bowl team and a perennial power house. The Chiefs wasted no time as they hired Steve Spagnuolo just over two days after letting Sutton walk. Spagnuolo is a very experienced coach in the NFL as his talents have been most recently utilized by the New York Giants. As the Giants defensive coordinator his 2016 defense allowed the second fewest points in the league. Spagnuolo will be given one of the worst defenses in the NFL finishing dead last in opponents’ yards per game and passing yards per game as well as being in the bottom three teams in opponents rush yards per game and points per game. The Chiefs are hoping Spagnuolo can bring the same change as he did in 2016 with the Giants. With defensive standouts such as Dee Ford potentially leaving for free agency this move will certainly not be the last one worth following as the Chiefs work to take the next step to win a very talented AFC.
